I’m afraid that Motor Trend is using Netscape Navigator 3.0 to design their web pages, but it’s not really worth reading anyway.

Short version: you could buy a nice house instead. Written by a person who considers the GT-R’s practical in *their* life, which means their opinions are flawed to the point of being publicly mocked. Don’t be an asshole. If you’ve got the cash, go buy a GT-R. It might not have the soulful flair of something from Italy. It might be horrible for trips to Home Depot. Whatever.
Why would I offer this advice ... having never driven one?
Nor even sat in one?
Disliking the looks of them in general?
Well, I sat near one yesterday. Even saw it. Briefly. While driving a V10 BMW M5 on a closed track. It looks exaggerated because I braked to get passed (you point out the window to acknowledge/permit it for safety, and I didn’t have to brake but I did this instance to be sure he’d be able to brake in time for the turn).
Here’s why you want a GT-R. You only need to watch a few seconds. Even if you’re literally blind you’d know when I got passed.

Not going to lie, it took me a year or so to finally warm up to the R35. I mean, sure, I want a manual GT-R but hey.

I’ve driven them on the road and I’ve driven them on the track, I’d take my FR-S, a Miata, or a Caymen over it on a road course any day. Extremely uninspiring car to drive, it doesn’t push you to get any better. I expected to love it, left disappointed.

I was never a fan until I got to drive one on a track. I was always worried about what the reviewers said about it being soulless or robotic. It was SO easy to drive SO fast! I’m still not sure how I would feel about one on the street but they are fantastic and very confidence inspiring on a racecourse.

But could that be because the FR-S, Miata, or Cayman don’t perform at the same level as a GTR? The GTR’s limits are so high that most of us aren’t experienced enough to utilize its limits. In the FR-S, Miata, or Cayman one can quicker reach each cars limits because they are lower.

Nope, driven 458s and gt3s as well and loved them. The GT-R (at least the ones I’ve instructed at hpdes) is the car slow drivers pick to go fast. It irons out sloppy inputs so average drivers can feel like heroes, but it won’t make them any better. And It’s too fucking heavy (and yes you do feel it), there is a reason it doesn’t compete in top level time attack.
It’s a decent road car though.

People say it’s souless and robotic because it’s an asian car. They’ve been saying that shit since the 80s. Basically when someone who loves europeon cars thinks an asian car is good and they have nothing really bad to say about it they default to the souless robot talk.
Meanwhile the awd lambo same chassis audi with dct and all the same AWD tech as the GTR just SOMEHOW has soul. Many of these supercars people are saying have a soul over a GTR is simply because of badge. They all have the same tech and hardware. In fact if the Audi R8 didn’t go up in price and was still the same price of a GTR that is when you could say the GTR was overpriced. BADGE and brand prestige does mean something in terms of dollar value. The GTR was like the NSX (another “souless” car) in the 90s. It made these people make cars that caught up to it. They did. There is no difference between an awd dct supercar vs a GTR now. The only thing people hit the GTR on is that it should offer more because it typically did. However that shouldn’t be expected.
People who say that shit have one of three problems. They are a fanboy of euro cars, they have no clue what they are talking about and are parroting comedians who change their opinions based on what’s funny to say at the time like Jeremy Clarkson, or they are racist or badge snobs and think everything Japanese people make have no soul. You see that a lot especially with old men in motorcycling. If you have an asian bike it doesn’t have the soul of a Harley Davidson or Ducati or Moto Guzzi.... just because it’s made by asians. The bikes could ride exactly identical, sound the same, and look just as good. However asian hands touched it.... so no soul. These are the kind of people who would say a totally unique, beautiful and fantastic car like a FD RX7 had no soul. I have zero tolerance for this shit. It comes from the idea decades ago that asians themselves were “souless japs” and the like because they followed heathen religions. It was then also used as a marketing tool by their competition.
I’ll take a souless 240Z any day over a soulful GTV6 (a massively overhyped due to badge italian car I used to own that is vastly inferior in quite literally every way)
On the Jeremy Clarkson thing he will go from one episode of Top Gear talking about how trash a corvette is then in his own off the shelf videos praise is one of the the best cars on sale today. Despite being the EXACT SAME MODEL. People actually base all their car opinions on this man. It’s ridiculous, they don’t understand he’s a comedian first and a car reviewer second.
